The Bean burger is an iconic San Antonio dish originally made with a beef patty topped with diced onions, pico de gallo or jalapenos, crushed Fritos corn chips, refried beans, and Cheez Whiz. We've changed it up slightly by using cheddar cheese and adding avocado. The interesting blend of textures and flavors make this burger unique and memorable. This is a treat well worth a few extra jumping jacks! Caution... these are messy but so worth it!
Season Ground Beef with Meat Church Holy Gospel Seasoning.
Form meat into patties and make depression in the middle with fingers.
Cook patties on hot grill, depression side up for 3-4 minutes. Turn patties over and cook until desired temperature.
Remove the patties from direct heat and add your refried beans, Fritos, Jalapenos or Pico de gallo and top with cheese. Let cheese melt and then remove from the grill.
Toast hamburger buns to your liking.
Add condiments (mustard, ketchup and/or mayonnaise) to the bun and then place the patty on the bun. If using avocados or guacamole, place on top of beans and Fritos. Replace top bun and lightly press down to squish toppings together for easier eating. Enjoy!
Recipe Note
In addition, you can add onions, a tomato slice or Picante sauce would be good but honestly, this sandwich is pretty thick already. It gets even messier if you go overboard on the extras.
